when i was 12/13 and listening to a lot of manson, my mom surprised me one day by tossing an album onto my lap. i’d never heard of the band before, and she said something along the lines of, “you might like this” (but her tone sounded a lot more like, “educate yourself for the love of god”). it was bauhaus’ 1979-1983 compilation. i shrugged it off for a while — hesitant, as i was at that time, to try new things — until one day, and i will never forget this day, while cleaning my room, i decided to pop the album into my cheesy, totally 90’s, totally purple cd player. 

life changing chords, you guys. life changing chords. the first few notes of “double dare” are like — i don’t understand music, okay?, like, i have no training in it, i don’t know how to talk about it, i don’t know the terminology — i just know when i hear something and it knocks my off my fucking feet, and this song did the trick. i had to sit down. i had to take a breather. and i listened to the rest of the album like that: on my bed, one hand on the bedframe, the other on my heart, wondering what in god’s name was happening to me.
